- Crank turns but the window doesn’t move. On casements and awnings, the gear in the operator has stripped or the arm has separated from the sash. The operator is a replaceable part, but the window has to be opened and the arm re-set correctly or it’ll bind again in six months.

- Lock is stiff, or won’t engage at all. The keeper has moved, the frame has shifted, or the lock mechanism has worn internally. A forcing the lock is how homeowners snap the lock housing off the sash.
